Mitre & Mat · Liberty, Missouri

Four days a week, and two of them are short.

The single most useful thing on this page is the hours, because the most common way a job goes wrong is somebody driving over on a Tuesday.

Open

  • Wednesday, 11 to 4. Quietest day. Best if you want the bench to yourself and twenty minutes of somebody's attention.
  • Thursday, 11 to 5:30. The long day.
  • Friday, 11 to 4.
  • Saturday, 10 to 2. Busiest by a distance. Expect to wait behind two people around eleven.
  • Sunday, Monday, Tuesday: shut. The bench still runs on Monday and Tuesday, which is why the door does not.

Carry it in flat

If it is rolled, do not unroll it yourself. Bring the roll. Paper that has lived in a tube for years will crack along the curl if it is flattened in one go, and there is a slow way to do it that costs nothing if we start from the roll.

If it is already in a frame and the frame is coming off, bring the whole thing rather than taking it apart in the car. Half of what arrives here loose has a corner missing.

Do not trim anything

Not the border, not the white margin, not the ragged edge, not the bit with a date written on it. Paper can always be hidden behind a mat and it can never be put back. This is the only rule on the page that we would call a rule.

How long it takes

  • Two weeks if the moulding is one of the sixty or so profiles on the wall here.
  • Four weeks if it is ordered in, which covers most gold, most wide profiles, and anything a designer picked out of a book.
  • Same week for a straight reglaze, a re-hang, or a broken corner, if you can be flexible about the day.
  • Say the date. If it is a gift with a date on it, say the date at the counter and not at the end. Almost everything can be moved forward, and nothing can be moved forward after the order goes in.

What we do not do

Restoration, cleaning, and anything involving solvent on an original. There are two people in the metro who do that properly and we will give you both names rather than have a go.

Paying

Half at the counter, half at pickup. No deposit on anything under a hundred dollars. If a quote comes in higher than what you had in your head, say so, because there is almost always a version of the same job at two thirds of it.

Ring first if it is bigger than your car.

Anything over about four feet on the long side, we will come out and measure it on your wall rather than have you wrestle it through a door twice.
